Species: Brotia herculea (Gould, 1847)

Description:

Shell:   - up to 98 mm high, 10 - 34 mm wide

               - thick-walled, up to 12 flat whorls, apex mostly corroded.

               - visible suture

               - color hazel to dark brown

                - partially strongly pronunounced ridges,

               - also with dark brown spiralling bands,

               - strongly swollen body whorl

Operculum: - oval, with 4 - 6 rings

                   - central nucleus

Embryos are smooth, with sharp axial bends, shell height is 1.7 mm, width 1 mm, has 3.5 whorls

Body: -  dark grey to black, foot a little lighter in color, with light speckles.

Tentacles are straight, the blue eyes are located at their bases

Range/Habitat:

Myanmar and north-western Thailand: river systems of the Irawaddy, Chindwin and Salween

(with Moei River) and Chao Praya (with Ping and Nan River)

- climate zone: equatorial and subtropical (monsoon climate)

 

- clean, clear tributaries, on rocks, mud, sand, roots under leave accumulations

In accordance with their native climate zone they should be kept at 22 to 28 °C in the aquarium, with seasonal temperature variations.

Reproduction:

Brotia herculea is dioecious. The male fecundates the female by passing a spermatophor, the young snails develop in a brood pounch.

Lifte span:
Unfortunately, the editor does not have any data regarding the life span of these snails.

Food:

They proved flexible regarding the food they take. Every kind of food pellets are accepted, food tablets and granules with a higher plant content are preferred. The snail also eats vegetables (cucumber, red bell pepper, spinach), dead plant parts, muck and algae as well as carrion.
 

Additional information:

In an aquarium with sand this snail is stable, however, nothing has been known of tank-bred offspring. Its behavior is agile even in softer water with a pH value of about 6.5.
