|
Family: Thiaridae Troschel, 1857 Genus: Thiara Röding, 1798 Species: Thiara winteri (Von der Busch, 1842) Description: Shell: light brown with dark speckles, up to 2.3 cm long and about 2 cm wide, pointed vertical elongations only on imported animals, the F1 does not posses spikes any more. Aperture: teardrop-shaped Whorls: 6.5, moderately globose, body whorl is significantly larger. Operculum: paucispiral, closes off the aperture entirely. Body: grey, lighter speckles, eyes are located at the bases of the thin tentacles. Range: Indonesia, from the Indo-Pacific over the Greater Sunda Islands to Japan. Habitat: - fast-flowing freshwater rivers, brackish areas, small ponds Reproduction: - dioecious, parthenogenetic, viviparous The offspring hatch form the eggs inside the mother snail and wander into the breeding sac. When their development is complete they are released by the mother snail. According to my own observation a large mother snail, 2.3 cm in size, does not only release one or two young snails but 10 to 30. Smaller females release less offspring. When the water parameters are inopportune no young are released at all. The offspring are "born" in the aquarium mostly after a water change and when the lights are out. Food: Algae, rotted plant parts, carrion and diatoms. In the aquarium this snail eats any kind of tablet or flake food as well as vegetables. Behavior in the aquarium/keeping conditions: Burrower, but also above the ground, depending on the tank community and the food of Does not mind socialization with fish or dwarf shrimp. A pH value under 5 is not tolerated. Keeping in tanks of 5 l and larger. Water hardness from soft to hard. Sandy substrate is of advantage, but not compulsive.
