Tylomelania towutica - ( Kruimel, 1913)

Description:

The brown, thick-walled shell of Tylomelania towutica is up to about 64.9 mm long and 20.4 mm wide.

It has between 4 to 9 whorls, older snails have a corroded apex.

The pronounced axial ridges are linear, sometimes slightly slanted, seldomly curved and there are weak spiralling ridges. The aperture is ovoid, and there is a siphonal canal at the base (bottom end).

The columnella's interior is of a dark grey, sometimes brownish in color.

The multispiral operculum is round and has 8 to 9 rings.

The body has white dots or patches.

The males do not differ from the females optically. 94% of all females gathered carried 1 to 7 young snails up to 9.3 mm large in their breeding sac.

It can be discerned well from other Tylomelania species by its "size" and its pronounced linear axial structure.

South Sulawesi, Lake Towuti and Tominanga River

Habitat:

T. towutica Lake Towuti, Tominanga River

It is a hard-substrate dweller living at depths of 0,5 to 1 m. They live on stones and sunken wood.

Food:

It eats all common powdered as well as tablet foods offered in the aquarium as well as vegetables and dead plant parts.

Behavior in the aquarium:

It proved to be unproblematic in the aquarium, however, it is not as revealing as the others. You cannot see much of its body, it's funny though how it crawls on sunken wood. When doing so it climbs to and fro on the thinnest twigs through the entire aquarium, this makes it really special.

The aquarium:

The aquarium should not be under 40 cm in length. However, when using so small a tank you should make sure the snails have enough opportunities to climb.

It can do without sandy ground, as it crawls on hard substrates most of the time. Apart from this it likes the usual water parameters, the temperatures can be a little lower, around 25 to 26 °C, and it also likes a stronger current.
